Why it matters

Staying independent takes more than strength.

Getting up off the floor. Carrying the shopping. Staying steady on the stairs. Turning to reverse the car. Strength, balance, mobility and confidence on your feet decide how well the years ahead go — and every one of them responds to training, at any age.

Strength

Muscle fades with age unless you use it. Body weight, bands and light weights, built up gradually, keep it — and build it back. Good for your bones, too.

Balance

Steadiness is a skill you can train. We practise it every class, so stairs, kerbs and busy pavements feel easy again.

Mobility & stretching

Freer hips, shoulders and back mean reaching, bending and turning without thinking twice. Every class ends with a proper stretch.

Confident on your feet

A longer, surer stride. Quicker feet when something catches you out. And knowing how to get down to the floor and back up again.

UK physical activity guidelines recommend strength and balance activities on at least two days a week.

The exercises

Every exercise has a reason.

We don't do exercise for exercise's sake. Each movement trains something you do every day — so you feel the difference outside the class, not just in it. Weights are one part of it; balance, stretching and moving well get just as much time.

Strength

  • Sit-to-stands
For getting up from a chair, the sofa or the car.
  • Step-ups
    For stairs, kerbs and hills.
  • Carries, rows and presses
For shopping bags, suitcases, lifting the grandchildren and reaching the top shelf.

Balance

  • Single-leg stands
For putting on socks and trousers without leaning on the wall.
  • Heel-to-toe walking
For narrow paths, uneven ground and busy pavements.
  • Reach-and-step drills
For catching yourself if you trip, and reaching without wobbling.

Mobility & stretching

  • Hip and spine flows
For turning to look over your shoulder, and the golf swing.
  • Shoulder reaches
For washing your hair, zips and the top cupboard.
  • Calf and hamstring stretches
For bending to tie your shoes, and a longer, easier stride.

Confident on your feet

  • Walking drills
Posture, stride and pace, for longer walks that feel easier.
  • Quick-feet games
Stepping and reaction drills, for quicker feet when something catches you out.
  • Floor to standing
For playing on the floor with the grandchildren — and knowing you can get back up.

Every exercise has an easier and a harder version, including supported options. Your coach picks the right one for you.

Questions

Good to know.

I've never done anything like this. Is it for me?

Yes. Most people who join won't have. Your coach starts you gently, teaches every movement, and builds from there at your pace.

Is it all weights?

No. Strength is one part of every class, mostly with your own body weight, bands and light weights. Just as much time goes on balance, footwork, mobility and stretching.

Is there an upper age limit?

No. If you're 55 or over, you're welcome. Every exercise has easier and supported versions, so the class works for you whatever your starting point.

I have a health condition or an old injury.

Tell us in your health questionnaire. We adapt every exercise to you, and if needed we'll ask you to check with your GP before you start.

What's the progress check?

Four quick, simple tests — grip, chair stands, balance and walking speed — done as part of your class, in your first week and every six weeks after. No extra appointment, no extra cost.

What do I need to bring?

Comfortable clothes, trainers and a water bottle. We bring all the equipment.

Can I cancel?

Yes. There's no joining fee and no contract — just a month's notice.
